With this issue of the Internet Tips E-Zine, I am going to give you the tips that I feel will personally endear you to others on the Internet. I am warning you that these suggestions are my opinions. Opinions that I have formed over my more than a decade of interacting with others on the net.

I feel strongly that social media marketing and Web 2.0 with its plethora of networks has become important to so many, because we were wishing and looking for a community to join. As in any viable community of people, personality helps determine those we are drawn to and hang around with. We all pick those we know, like and trust. For example, I have gurus whose e-mails I always open, whom I join on teleseminars and from whom I purchase info-products.

What Personality Traits Have Made Me a “Raving Fan?”

TRAIT #1. You Know What Is Unique and Special about You and What You Do

Jack Lord wrote, “What you have, what you are - your looks, your personality, your way of thinking - is unique. No one in the world is like you. So capitalize on it.”

Take the time and ask yourself, “What am I known for? What's my brand? What do I stand for? What hill am I the King or Queen of? What's my memorable "hook" or specialty or claim to fame?” This is not necessarily Internet related. After all, we have had and do have a life besides our time on the computer.

What is your personality? Have you taken the many behavior/personality tests that are in abundance on the Internet and are also used by Human Resources departments when hiring, firing and interviewing. I know many entrepreneurs who say that they could never work for anyone else. Is this because of their personalities or mindsets?

TRAIT #2. Even Though You Know Who You Are, You Aren’t Pushy about It

You will find that others will relate to you for who you are without you being pushy or salesy. Just be real and be yourself.

When you write, write like you are having a conversation with a friend or neighbor. Let your honest and helpful personality shine through. It all comes down to authenticity and sincerity. We have all become so tuned to other’s use of agendas that we know immediately when they are insincere.

TRAIT #3. Realize That Not Everyone Will Warm Up to You and Your Personality

As a presenter – and, isn’t that what we are doing on the Internet ? – I learned early on that out of 100 people, automatically 25 will like us and 25 won’t like us, with the remaining 50 “up for grabs.” What we say and/or do will determine the ratio.

Think about those people you have met and experienced during your life. How many have you known, liked and trusted? And why? What were their personalities? You will discover that we are drawn to those who are like us. For example, If we are out-going, we enjoy others who are out-going.

TRAIT #4. You Are Always a “Professional” in Every Way

In my list of what makes someone a “Professional” I include treating others as they want to be treated; being honest and ethical in all dealings; and having character, discipline and perseverance. These are coupled with the following behaviors: good manners, promptness, a positive attitude, excellent communication skills, doing what they say they will do, and walking their talk.

TRAIT #5. Realize that You Can Work on and Readjust Your Personality

One of my favorite discussion lists held a lively conversation about Nature vs. Nurture. Personally, I don’t feel that one can separate the influences both have on us. One finds that there are great personalities that have come from both wonderful and terrible backgrounds. It is interesting to me to read about the number of wealthy and successful people who have faced bankruptcy, poverty, being fired from a job, and failure in the past.

Yes, experiences can change – either add to or subtract from our personalities – and yet, we can also work on those habits that give us our personality. We have the ability to create a pleasing personality, as long as we are true to ourselves.

So, what are you waiting for?
